Book Adventure - Free Online Book QuizzesHere's a great (and free!) alternative to Accelerated Reader. You will need to set up a free account for each student. I suggest that they use their school user name and password; if they forget, we can easily figure it out.
Everyday Edits - Education World
Studies show that daily exposure to language skills -- including skills of spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar -- will build students' skills and increase test scores. Organized by month of the year, each paragraph contains ten built-in errors of basic spelling, grammar, punctuation, or capitalization. Each one also shares some very timely information too -- high-interest information that will build cultural literacy as it improves language skills.
I Ghot It Right
An excellent writing help that was originally developed by dyslexics for their fellow dyslexics, this website can be helpful to everyone. It helps students with grammar and punctuation skills. Online service is free, but slightly limited--only 600 characters.
Media Awareness Network
You'll find a multitude of lessons from the Canadian Media Awareness Network. Search by subject, grade level, or simply browse the entire collection. Advertising All Around Us is a good place to begin raising students' consciousness about looking critically at brand culture. There are excellent games such as Privacy Playground, CyberSense and Nonsense, and Allies and Aliens, plus much more.
National Grammar Day
National Grammar Day began in 2008 and is celebrated every March 4th. Grammar Girl provides tips for speaking and writing with correct grammar, a skill that is extremely important. There are lots of advertisements to help sponsor the site, but the tips and funny stories, quick videos, and daily grammar calendar are fabulous!
Web English Teacher Contains links for lesson plans, students activities, literature, grammar, mythology, poetry, journalism, and just for fun. There is also a Writer's Feature that is changed periodically, as well as a section on 6 + 1 Trait Writing.
Writing Fix Sections include Writing Prompts, Writing Lessons, Writing Across the Curriculum, Reading in the Content Area, Classroom Tools, as well as information about 6 + 1 Trait Writing.
FOR THE 8th GRADE ANNE FRANK UNIT: United States Holocaust Memorial Museum You can watch a short 8 minute video "What You Do Matters" about the museum and the holocaust. There are pictures, survivors' family members first-hand account and explanations of how Hitler's Nazis and WWII came about. Click on Education and then For Students, and there's a lot more.
